SALMON CREEK, Sonoma County — Visitors to North and South Salmon Creek beaches on Sonoma County’s coast are subject to stricter wildlife-protection rules than at some neighboring Sonoma Coast State Park beaches. California State Parks says dogs, horses and fires are not allowed on either Salmon Creek beach.
The restrictions are intended to protect the federally threatened western snowy plover, a small shorebird that feeds and nests on open sand. Human activity and animals can disturb the birds or drive them from feeding areas. The rules apply to both beaches even though some other parts of Sonoma Coast State Park allow leashed dogs.
State Parks also warns that surf along this coastline is hazardous. The lack of a pet-friendly beach does not mean other beach facilities are closed, but visitors should not take pets onto restricted sand, approach birds or enter posted nesting areas.
What residents and visitors should know
Before arriving, check the official park page for any additional restrictions or temporary closures. Those traveling with a dog can consult the park’s list of specific beaches where pets are permitted rather than assume all beach access points share the same rules.
