SALMON CREEK, Sonoma County — California State Parks explicitly advises against swimming along Sonoma Coast beaches, including the popular shoreline at Salmon Creek. Strong rip currents, heavy surf and unexpected large waves can endanger even people who consider themselves experienced swimmers.
The agency warns visitors never to turn their backs on the ocean and to keep children away from the highest reach of the water. Rescue staff cover a lengthy coastline and may not be close enough to respond immediately to an incident at a particular cove. Unstable coastal bluffs and rocks present an additional hazard to people attempting to find a shortcut to the shore.
Salmon Creek’s sandy beach attracts people who come to walk, observe birds, surf or fish. The fact that surfers sometimes use the area does not make ordinary recreational swimming safe. Conditions vary with tides, swell and weather, and seemingly calm water can change abruptly.
What residents and visitors should know
Visitors should check forecasts and park alerts, remain well back from breaking waves and call 911 if a life-threatening emergency occurs. Attempting an untrained rescue in heavy surf can put additional lives at risk.
