SALMON CREEK, Sonoma County — Sonoma County’s coastal public-access planning documents propose exploring a nature trail west of Highway 1 at Salmon Creek Marsh, a sensitive wetland area beside the State Park shoreline.
The public access appendix reviewed by the California Coastal Commission also encourages consideration of a multiagency visitor center in the Salmon Creek, Bodega Bay or Bodega Dunes area. The suggestions are part of a long-range coastal access framework that weighs tourism, interpretive information and protection of natural resources.
The proposed trail and visitor-center concepts must not be presented as existing public facilities. Funding, property rights, environmental studies and permits would need to be resolved before construction. A line on a planning map also does not grant legal permission to cross private parcels or enter protected wetlands.
What residents and visitors should know
People seeking existing recreation should use designated Salmon Creek beach access points and maintained routes. Residents interested in future access can follow Sonoma County’s coastal planning process and California Coastal Commission records for later decisions.
