SALMON CREEK, Sonoma County — The mouth of Salmon Creek is not a permanently open channel to the Pacific. California wildlife emergency-planning records describe a sandbar that can close the stream mouth during low-flow periods, creating a lagoon behind the beach.
The state’s sensitive-site inventory identifies nearly two miles of sandy shoreline and freshwater wetlands north of the Highway 1 bridge. The seasonal opening and closing of the outlet changes water levels and habitat conditions, making the area important for birds, fish, amphibians and other wildlife.
Because the lagoon depends on seasonal flows and wave-driven sand movement, its condition on a given day should not be inferred from a photograph taken earlier in the summer. Water behind a sandbar is also not automatically safe for swimming or wading: bacterial contamination, changing depth and unexpected breach conditions may be concerns.
What residents and visitors should know
Residents and visitors should observe posted State Parks restrictions, avoid disturbing wetland habitat and check current health and environmental notices before entering natural water. A planning record describing the ecology is not a live water-quality test.
